News Nuggets 75

A volcano erupting in Chile several weeks ago.

When 'Hussein' is the Most Beautiful Word from Al Watan [of Oman in English]
"When Obama says that word 'Hussein', his will be the most beautiful voice the world's Muslims have ever heard from or about America."

Fighting Off Depression (Paul Krugman) of the New York Times
"The fact is that recent economic numbers have been terrifying, not just in the United States but around the world. Manufacturing, in particular, is plunging everywhere. Banks aren’t lending; businesses and consumers aren’t spending. Let’s not mince words: This looks an awful lot like the beginning of a second Great Depression."

Obama Arrives in Style from the Washington Post
"Longtime residents talked about forging a new kind of relationship with their president, one more intimate than any before."

"Part IV in a series of posts on the prospective elections for 2009 and 2010 tackles New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota and Ohio"

Great Expectations for Obama Abroad from the Christian Science Monitor
"The Promise of Change was central to Barack Obama's presidential election. It also played well abroad to a global populace that was largely critical of US policy in Iraq and its handling of suspected terrorists, according to polls. Expectations for a new approach are high."

"For the last two years, Ms. Pelosi, 68, of California, has been the driving force behind the Democratic Party's ambitions, using her firm grip on the House to set the agenda. Now she finds herself about to become facilitator in chief, working with her Senate counterpart, Harry Reid of Nevada, to advance the ideals of the nation’s new No. 1 Democrat: Barack Obama."

Obama Faces Legacy of Lawlessness at Justice from the Washington Independent
"The Bush Justice Department over the last eight years expelled or ignored attorneys that it didn’t agree with and replaced them with inexperienced lawyers hired more for their ideology than their qualifications. Many of those promoted and implemented conservative agendas that in some cases turned out to be illegal. Those lawyers who were given career positions can’t simply be pushed out by a new administration, however – and they could make it difficult for Obama to implement a new agenda."

George Bush's Legacy of Failure from the Guardian [of London]
"The president's defenders are puffing his record in a positive light - but reality keeps getting in the way."

BOOKSTORE NUGGET!

There are a lot of Obama books out right now, most of them glossy photo sugar bombs with little that is genuinely insightful.  A notable exception is How Barack Obama Won by Chuck Todd and Sheldon Gawiser of NBC News, a breezy, well-written, fact-filled review of what happened in 2007 and 2008.  An inexpensive little paperback that is a great read!
