Back to our regularly scheduled nuggets:
A Victory for Obama from an Unlikely Quarter - Pakistan (Fareed Zakaria) from Newsweek
"President Obama gets much credit for changing America's image in the world—he was probably awarded the Nobel Prize for doing so. But if you asked even devoted fans to cite a specific foreign-policy achievement, they would probably hesitate. "It's too soon for that," they would say. But in fact, there is a place where Barack Obama's foreign policy is working, and one that is crucial to U.S. national security—Pakistan."
Playing the History Card - Part I (Matthew Yglesias) from the Daily Beast
KEY NUGGET-OF-THE-DAY! On health care, THIS seems to be what is going to happen!
"The House will soon vote on health-care reform, but it won't be straightforward: Nancy Pelosi plans on using the “self-executing rule” or “deem and pass” to move health-care reform through her caucus—basically, the House will vote to pass a series of reconciliation fixes and this package will “deem” the Senate bill passed. It’s a complicated procedure that is meant to spare House members from having to vote directly on the unpopular Senate bill. Still, this weekend’s vote will be the decisive one, and President Obama will be able to sign health-care reform into law."
WOW! The stakes don't get any bigger! What a week this will be.
Reform's Not Passed -- But Implementation Plans Are Already Underway on Both Sides from Politico
I find this interesting and (hopefully) telling about how the health care bill may fare. We'll see.
"Supporters and opponents of health reform continue to duke it out ahead of next week’s expected final House vote, but both sides are already laying the groundwork to effectively implement reform should it pass. "
A Losing Strategy: The GOP Will Run Against Health Care (Jonathan Alter) from Newsweek
"If the bill gets signed, Republicans are setting themselves up for a "repeal the bill" campaign that will likely backfire in November's midterm elections. That's eight months away, but if the bill passes I'd bet on the GOP winning only a few new seats."
Obama Proposes Sweeping Education Reforms, New Federal Commitment to Kids from the Huffington Post
"A plan to overhaul the 2002 education law championed by President George W. Bush was unveiled by the Obama administration Saturday in hopes of replacing a system that in the last decade has tagged more than a third of schools as failing and created a hodgepodge of sometimes weak academic standards among states."
Getting Obama Right (David Brooks) from the New York Times
"Political partisans always imagine the other side is ruthlessly effective and that the public would be with them if only their side had better messaging. And finally, you’ll notice that both views distort reality. They tell you more about the information cocoons that partisans live in these days than about Obama himself. The fact is, Obama is as he always has been, a center-left pragmatic reformer."
A Glutton for Punishment (Richard Wolffe) from the Daily Beast
"Even as the bruising health-care battle draws to a close, the Obama White House is pushing an ambitious agenda for the midterm election year. Next up: climate change. "
THAT'S OUR MAN!!
A POLITICO Survey: The Tea Party's Least Favorite Republicans from Politico
"A little more than a year later, a POLITICO survey found tea party activists unhappy with many of the biggest names in the Republican Party. And that could complicate GOP plans to harness the energy of the tea parties as they head into the November midterm elections with hopes of rearranging the balance of power in Washington. "
Pope Knew Priest was Pedophile But Allowed Him to Continue with Ministry from the Guardian [of London]
It just keeps getting worse and worse. As many of you know, I have no personal beef with he Catholic Church -- but the issue here that I find most disturbing is that Pope Benedict and many of his immediate associates (along with those of his predecessors at the Holy See) have denied that the church had such a problem and came away blaming America or American culture when the news broke here. And yet, if this story is true, he and the others KNEW this was a problem in Europe and elsewhere and seem to simply lie about it.
"The priest was sent from Essen to Munich for therapy in 1980 when he was accused of forcing an 11-year-old boy to perform oral sex. The archdiocese confirmed that the Pope, who was then a cardinal, had approved a decision to accommodate the priest in a rectory while the therapy took place."
HIGH-SPEED RAIL NUGGET!!
Eight of the World's Most Popular High-Speed Trains from the Huggington Post
"Many places in the world are way ahead of us on rail projects, but they certainly give us something to aspire to. Take a look at some of the world's most popular high-speed trains, and let us know which you like best!"
HISTORY NUGGET!!
Who's Buried in the History Books? (Sean Wilentz) from the New York Times
"Ronald Reagan deserves posterity’s honor, and so it makes sense that the capital’s airport and a major building there are named for him. But the proposal to substitute his image for that of Ulysses S. Grant on the $50 bill is a travesty that would dishonor the nation’s bedrock principles of union, freedom and equality — and damage its historical identity. Although slandered since his death, Grant, as general and as president, stood second only to Abraham Lincoln as the vindicator of those principles in the Civil War era."
BABY ANIMALS NUGGET!!
Newborn Animals Around the World (Photos) from the Huffington Post
"In honor of spring's coming arrival, we've compiled some of the newest additions to the animal kingdom from the past few weeks. Some of them, such as the anteater, are especially noteworthy as their species are at risk of extinction. And all of them are adorable. Check out these newborns, and vote for your favorite!"
