News Nuggets 340

We're inaugurating a new tradition here at the News Nuggets: Pet Pictures Friday! We've had a lot of these lately, and I think I'd like to set aside one day for them specifically. As usual, these are from Americablog.

Psyching Out the Terrorists (Christopher Dickey) from Newsweek

"The Faisal Shahzad case shows how clever reconnaissance and good police work can disrupt terrorist networks."

Counter to this assessment is this equally interesting item from NPR yesterday morning:

How Media Coverage Crimped the Times Square Case (Dina Temple Raston) from NPR's Morning Edition

"Law enforcement officials usually say they can't talk to reporters about an ongoing investigation, but there were leaks in this case from the beginning — partly because of the dynamic between two powerful law enforcement forces in New York City."

Based on her story, it seems to me that the FBI and the NYC Police were the ones crimping their own case.

Where Are All the Terrorist Attacks? (Bruce Schneier) from AOL News

"If it's so easy, why aren't there more terrorist attacks like the failed car bomb in New York's Times Square? Or the terrorist shootings in Mumbai? Or the Moscow subway bombings? After the enormous horror and tragedy of 9/11, why have the past eight years been so safe in the U.S.? There are actually several answers to this question."

The Drill is Gone: Republicans Argue Over Offshore Oil (Joe Conason) from Salon

"While Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin still promote offshore drilling, moderate Republicans are not on board."

Ratzinger's Responsibility (Hans Kung) from the National Catholic Reporter [from March]

"Scandalous wrongs cannot be glossed over, we need a change of attitude. ... According to the latest Emnid-poll, only 10 percent of those interviewed in Germany believe that the church is doing enough in dealing with this scandal; on the contrary, 86 percent charge the church's leadership with insufficient willingness to come to grips with the problem. The bishops' denial that there is any connection between the celibacy rule and the abuse problem can only confirm their criticism."

Learning to Love the Healthcare Bill from the Nation

"Heading into the midterm elections of 2010, Obama has something concrete to show for his leadership, and that cannot be discounted. What matters more than anything at this juncture is how quickly the concrete benefits of healthcare reform start to flow to the millions of Americans in desperate need of help. "

Two Countries, One Looming Political Test (David Broder) from the Washington Post

"In separate sectors of the English-speaking democratic world, the capacity of the two-party system to cope with the pressures of an economic crisis is being tested this week, with important implications for both Britain and the United States."

Fear Itself from the Editorial Board of the New York Times

"A familiar group of politicians is cynically trying to use the Times Square plot as an excuse to weaken the rule of law. It would not make us safer."

Wall Street Reform: Progressive Dems Glimpse Victory (Ryan Grim) from the Huffington Post

"For the first time since the Great Depression, Congress has Wall Street on the defensive. One setback after another has beset the financial titans accustomed to having their way when it comes to writing rules and regulations that govern their industry, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) promised to push forward on reform Thursday."

Congress, Up in Arms (Gail Collins) from the New York Times

"There seems to be a strong sentiment in Congress that the only constitutional right suspected terrorists have is the right to bear arms. “I think you’re going too far here,” said Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina at a hearing of the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday. He was speaking in opposition to a bill that would keep people on the F.B.I. terrorist watch list from buying guns and explosives."

IN-credible!

Seeing Blue Shoots for Dems in 2010 (Jonathan Bernstein) from Salon

"As the economy recovers, so do the the odds for Democrats in November."

Can Crist Win in Florida as an Independent? from Time Magazine

"Crist's bet is that he can co-opt the Tea Party's frustration with U.S. politics and direct it at both the left and the right as a viable campaign strategy. So what does he have to do in order to, as he has pledged, save the American moderate from political extinction?"

This will certainly be a test of Crist's political skills. Rubio is pretty savvy.

Republican Voter Enthusiasm Advantage Halved in Past Month: Gallup from Huffington Post

"Republican registered voters' enthusiasm about voting in midterm elections this fall has dropped precipitously during the past month, cutting their enthusiasm advantage over Democrats almost in half, according to new Gallup polling data."

Poll: Tea Party Platform Fares Best Among GOP Conservatives from the Washington Post

There is a lot more here than this "no-kidding" headline -- read the article and the analysis links below.

"That conclusion, backed by numbers from a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, also suggests that the tea party may have little room for growth. Most Americans -- including large majorities of those who don't already count themselves as supporters -- say they're not interested in learning more about the movement. A sizable share of those not already sympathetic to the tea party also say that the more they hear, the less they like the movement."

Some further analysis is HERE and HERE.

CA-Sen: A Very Bad Day for Sarah Palin and Carly Fiorina from Daily Kos

"In her quest to win the Republican nomination for California's Senate race against Barbara Boxer, Carly Fiorina picked up what used to be an important endorsement: that of failed Vice-Presidential candidate and half-term Gubernatorial quitter Sarah Palin. Needless to say, it backfired--on both of them."

EGYPT NUGGET!!

For Underwater Museum: Isis Temple Fragment Dates Back to Cleopatra Era from the Discovery News

The story is more interesting than the headline. Seems that they may have found the burial temple of Marc Anthony and Cleopatra.

"The pylon, which once stood at the entrance to a temple of Isis, is to be the centerpiece of an ambitious underwater museum planned by Egypt to showcase the sunken city, believed to have been toppled into the sea by earthquakes in the 4th century."

They've been finding more from this site - look HERE.

DOG NUGGET!!

Dog Growls Contain Specific Information from Discovery News

"Dog growls may all sound the same to human ears, but they hold more specific meanings for dog listeners."

HORSE NUGGET!!

Horses Never Forget Human Friends from Discovery News

"Horses not only remember people who have treated them well, they also understand words better than expected, research shows."
