UP-FRONT ECONOMY NUGGET!!
How a New Jobless Era Will Transform America (Don Peck) from the Atlantic

"The Great Recession may be over, but this era of high joblessness is probably just beginning. Before it ends, it will likely change the life course and character of a generation of young adults. It will leave an indelible imprint on many blue-collar men. It could cripple marriage as an institution in many communities. It may already be plunging many inner cities into a despair not seen for decades. Ultimately, it is likely to warp our politics, our culture, and the character of our society for years to come."

U.S. Is Deferring Millions in Pakistani Military Aid from the New York Times

"The Obama administration is suspending and, in some cases, canceling hundreds of millions of dollars of aid to the Pakistani military, in a move to chasten Pakistan for expelling American military trainers and to press its army to fight militants more effectively."

Reinvigorating Egypt's Revolution? (Thanassis Cambanis) from the Atlantic

"Scenes from the largest Cairo protest since the February ouster of President Hosni Mubarak."

Once More to Tahrir: On a Hot Summer Day, Egypt's Revolution Grinds On (Max Strasser) from Foreign Policy Magazine
"July 8's protest is an extension of the revolution, which many Egyptians believe has not yet been brought to fruition. The feeling has been reinforced in recent weeks by the perception that justice is not being served for dozens of corrupt officials who ran the country and then ordered the killing of protesters during the uprising. "Revolution First," reads a common protest sign in Tahrir."

'I Had No Knowledge of Phone Hacking While I Was Editor of NotW': Rebekah Brooks from the Daily Mail [of the UK]
That's her story and she's sticking with it!  From Murdoch's point-of-view, (as I noted yesterday) I suspect it is essential that Brooks maintain this position -- to keep the scandal in the News of the World company and NOT let it bleed up into the News Corp.
"Rupert Murdoch says closing News of the World was 'collective decision'
Chief executive Rebekah Brooks insists 'no reason to believe' hacking happened at other News International papers. She tells News of the World journalists there are worse revelations to come in scandal. She was told if she quit on Monday then 200 jobs could have been saved. Staff put in 'virtual quarantine' with access to internet and emails cut."
Yup -- Brooks knows plenty, probably enough to take any number of News Corp brass down with her.  We'll see what she says under oath.

Noose of the World (Henrdik Hertzberg) from the New Yorker
"In terms of its net impact on human welfare, News of the World has been the least evil of Rupert Murdoch’s three-cornered Axis of Evil, the other two being the Fox News Network and the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal. Still, evil is evil."

'Guilty Excitement' in French Media Over Turn in DSK Affair (Olivier Picard) from Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace [of France in English]
"By giving the floor almost exclusively to friends of DSK, France 2's 20 hours mutilated the news. If you were watching, you might have believed that an acquittal had already been handed down! Never mind that at the same time, the channel felt no embarrassment replaying the painful sequence of a handcuffed DSK, in contempt of all the proclaimed ethics of French media."

Why Unemployment Matters (Megan McArdle) from the Atlantic
"Long-term joblessness is devastating, and more and more Americans are experiencing it in today's economy."

Who Had the Worst Week in Washington? GOP Candidates (and their Fundraisers) (Chris Cillizza) from the Washington Post
"Fundraising in politics tends to be a leading indicator of momentum. Donors like to be with a winner — ah, human nature — so the candidate who can collect the most checks is usually the hottest commodity. Unfortunately for the Republicans running for president, the inverse is also true."

LOCAL ENVIRONMENT NUGGET!!

A very different take on how seemingly everyone in the state has been pushing fracking as PA's big economic future -- and what happens to those who don't share that vision.
Game Changer: Hydraulic Fracking in PA (AUDIO) (Ira Glass) from NPR's This American Life
"A professor in Pennsylvania makes a calculation, to discover that his state is sitting atop a massive reserve of natural gas—enough to revolutionize how America gets its energy. But another professor in Pennsylvania does a different calculation and reaches a troubling conclusion: that getting natural gas out of the ground poses a risk to public health. Two men, two calculations, and two very different consequences."

OBAMA FAMILY NUGGET!!
The Tragic Life of Barack Obama’s Father (Sally H. Jacobs) from the Daily Beast

"Leaving behind his son, his divorced wife, and an unfinished degree from Harvard, Barack Obama Sr. returned to his native Kenya, where women, booze, and work problems got the best of him. An exclusive excerpt from 'The Other Barack' "

POTENTIALLY USEFUL 'IN THE WILD' NUGGET!!
