UP-FRONT PITTSBURGH VOTING ALERT!!
Tomorrow -- VOTE!!  Our libraries depend on it!!  There is a CRITICAL referendum on the ballot concerning the funding of our libraries in Allegheny County!  Make the time!  Fitzgerald and Raja are also up for County executive.  I plan on not voting for either of them -- both have sold themselves to the natural gas interests in Southwestern PA.  I would urge you to write in Dana Dolney's name -- she is a well-informed critic of gas drilling who has (RIGHTLY in my view) emphasized how much is not known about the basic processes involved and the degree to which gas drilling has been fast-tracked over virtually all the normal due diligence scientific and regulatory hurdles that normally protect us.  Write her name in.  She may not win -- but at least you can send a message of conscience.

Most of the Unemployed No Longer Receive Benefits (Christopher Rugaber) from the Lake County News-Sun [of Illinois]
"Early last year, 75 percent were receiving checks. The figure is now 48 percent — a shift that points to a growing crisis of long-term unemployment. Nearly one-third of America’s 14 million unemployed have had no job for a year or more. Congress is expected to decide by year’s end whether to continue providing emergency unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If the emergency benefits expire, the proportion of the unemployed receiving aid would fall further. The ranks of the poor would also rise."

Christian Politics Create Unholy Alliances (David Gushee) from USA Today
