Weak China Trade Data Confirm Outlook Worsening from CNBC
"China's exports grew at a slower pace than forecast in August while imports surprisingly fell, underlining the mounting challenge facing Beijing's policymakers as domestic demand flags while the global economic outlook darkens."

Millennials Savvy Voting Bloc Searching for Solutions from United Press International
"If you think the voting bloc known as millennials are a bunch of folks who care more about themselves than the world in which they live, you'd be off base. Way off base."
I totally agree with this sentiment on today's young adults.

Is College a Lousy Investment? (Megan McArdle) from Newsweek
"Mythomania about college has turned getting a degree into an American neurosis. It's sending parents to the poorhouse and saddling students with a backpack full of debt that doesn't even guarantee a good job in the end. With college debt making national headlines, Megan McArdle asks, is college a bum deal?"
Note: This article is like the very opposite of "timely."  In most places, the first day of classes has already happened and parents and students are locked in for this semester if not the year.

Obama Appoints Record Number Of Women Judges To Federal Bench (Amanda Terkel) from the Huffington Post
"With the confirmation of Stephanie Rose as a U.S. district court judge on Monday, President Barack Obama has put 72 women on the federal bench -- the most ever appointed by a president in one term. It also ties the number former President George W. Bush had confirmed in his entire eight-year presidency, according to numbers provided by the White House."

Have Republicans Lost the Culture War? (Paul Waldman) from Salon
"As last week's Democratic convention shows, now it's liberals touting their positions on social issues."

Obama’s Advantage, Romney’s Openings (E.J. Dionne) from the Washington Post
"President Obama heads into the campaign’s last phase with some major advantages, starting, as Ronald Reagan did, with a rock solid base. These voters will support him no matter what the economic numbers say."

Obama Outraises Romney for First Time in Months from CNN
"President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and supporting committees brought in more than $114 million last month – the first time the incumbent has outraised his opponent, Gov. Mitt Romney, since April. ... Romney’s campaign brought in $111 million last month."

For some great in-depth analysis of the problems Romney now faces in the area of fund-raising, see this item:
Obama campaign raises more than Romney in August (Jed Lewison) from Daily Kos
"... arguably the more significant number is that in August, Romney spent more than he raised, churning through nearly $130 million. That means Romney spent more in August than in any other month since the start of the campaign, yet he failed to move the needle. In light of that, the fact that he is now being outraised by the Obama campaign presents an even bigger challenge."

CNN Poll: Obama Up Six Points Over Romney Nationally from CNN
"A new survey indicates President Barack Obama moved up four points following the Democratic National Convention last week, and now has a six point advantage over his Republican challenger Mitt Romney."
Markos Moulitsas looks at this poll's internals and comes up with a lot of good news for Obama.

Obama Leads Romney By 5 Points In Ohio After Conventions from Talking Points Memo
"Obama leads the Republican nominee 45 percent to 50 percent in Ohio, according to the latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling. The survey also found that Ohioans believe Democrats had the better national convention."

Why Obama's Convention Bounce Is a Big Deal (Molly Ball) from the Atlantic
"The fact that the president is pulling ahead in the polls means Mitt Romney missed his biggest opportunity of the race so far."

Within Hours, Mitt Romney Takes Back Everything He Said About Preexisting Conditions (Kevin Drum) from Mother Jones Magazine
"On national TV on Sunday morning, with millions of people watching, Mitt Romney told David Gregory that there were parts of Obamacare he actually liked. In fact, he said, one of the goals of his healthcare plan "is to make sure that those with preexisting conditions can get coverage." A few hours later, with approximately zero people listening, a spokesman quietly "clarified" what he meant:..."
WOW.  Not only did Mitt do a very quick flip - but he flipped to the side which the Obama people will be able to use very effectively in Florida.  Look for him to do another flip (or perhaps a half-flip) back again later today or tomorrow to cover up the flop that his words created yesterday.  A SPINE OF STEEL clearly!

Barack Obama is Winning...and He Has Been Pretty Much All Year (Steve Kornacki) from Salon
"The movement in Obama’s direction reinforces a point that many neutral campaign observers have been reluctant to make for months now: The presidential race is not, and has not been, a virtual tie – Obama is, and has been, winning."

Following Clinton, Dems Prep Attack On Romney Plan To Slash Medicaid (VIDEO) from Talking Points Memo
"Democrats are poised to open a new and potent attack on Mitt Romney’s proposed governing agenda. And they have Bill Clinton to thank."
This could easily move the needle in Florida for Obama.

Why I Left the GOP (Jeremiah Goulka) from Salon
"I grew up in a rich, conservative household, but after Katrina and Iraq, I realized my priorities were out of order."

With GOP Jittery, Romney Faces Test of Resolve (Byron York) from the Washington Examiner
"Mitt Romney and his top aides are running an essentially faith-based campaign. Whatever the polls say at the moment, whatever the pundits say, whatever some nervous Republicans say, Team Romney simply does not believe President Obama can win re-election in today's terrible economy. ... Meanwhile, Republican nervousness is spreading and threatens to turn into a stampede"
A good assessment of the emerging panic and early-bird finger-pointing that is likely to grow so long as Romney's campaign continues to lag.
