The article reminds of the scene in Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse five when a dying man says, "this ain't so bad" This latest dispute is not about fish. China has calculated that the value of the vast hydrocarbon reserves under the South China Sea outweigh all other considerations. China's neighbors and the US can stomp and yell all they want, but in the end, the countries with possession of oil and gas have the power, both figuratively and literally. If the US had any energy policy that acknowledged reality, we would have established exploratory rigs in conjunction with our SE Asian friends a decade ago, locking out the Chinese. In the US, we found a puddle of oil in North Dakota and suddenly declared "energy independence", and virtually the entire US has fallen for this ludicrous fairy tale. The US imports 7 million barrels of oil every day. The Chinese leadership aren't so gullible and naïve to believe in "energy independence", rather they acknowledge the reality that nations will have access to fossil energy or face oblivion.
