News Nuggets 1106

DAYLEE PICTURE: A Unicron Fish at a Weymouth aquarium in the UK.  From the Daily Mail of the UK.

The Nuggetsman is on the road today so our collection of nuggets is fairly modest.

FBI: Petraeus Affair Part of Criminal Probe: Why Obama was Not Informed from ABC News
"The FBI withheld its findings about Gen. David Petreaus' affair from the White House and congressional leaders because the agency considered them the result of a criminal investigation that never reached the threshold of an intelligence probe, law enforcement sources said today."

Report Sees U.S. as Top Oil Producer, Overtaking Saudi Arabia, in 5 Years from the New York Times
I'm quite suspicious of some of the claims made in this piece.
"That increased oil production, combined with new American policies to improve energy efficiency, means that the United States will become “all but self-sufficient” in meeting its energy needs in about two decades — a “dramatic reversal of the trend” in most developed countries..."

Top Candidates for State Dept. Are Both Facing Possible Hurdles from the New York Times
"Both Ms. Rice and Mr. Kerry have a reservoir of good will in the Oval Office, and if she gets the nod, officials said, Mr. Kerry could be considered for defense secretary. But politics will inevitably play a part in Mr. Obama’s decision..."

How Mitt Romney Finally Killed Reaganomics (Michael Tomasky) from the Daily Beast
"Post-election chatter has focused on demographics, Latinos, and the culture war. But the most significant consequence of the election may be the death of trickle-down economics."

Romney Earned Zero Votes in Some Urban Precincts from CBS News
"President Obama's victory over Mitt Romney in last Tuesday's presidential election was driven, in part, by the president's strength in urban areas, where robust support cushioned the incumbent against electoral deficits in rural America. But almost a week after the election, it is now becoming clear just how lopsided President Obama's victory was in some cities: in dozens of urban precincts, Mitt Romney earned literally zero votes."

Republicans at a Crossroads (Rod Dreher) from the BBC
"The Republican Party is becoming a perversely rigid sect, more concerned with being militantly correct than being pragmatic and successful. With each passing election cycle, their purity will become the purity of the desert. ... Conservatives must be conservative, but we must also recognize that conservatism is not an ideology, but a way of approaching the world ..."

Some Conservative Pundits Tout...Moderation (Howard Kurtz) from the Daily Beast
"Kristol, Hannity urge GOP rethinking."

New Tea Party News Network Defining Conservative Brand and Mission (Lloyd Grove) from the Daily Beast
Talk about doubling down on a clearly discredited approach!
"Is there really a need for a Tea Party news operation at a time when the ideological crusade is being discredited and blamed for much of what is damaging the GOP? Definitely, its creators tell Lloyd Grove."

ELECTION RESULT OVER-REACTION NUGGET!!
Woman Blames Husband for Obama’s Reelection, Runs Him Over with Her Jeep from Gawker
"Upset over the result of last week's presidential election, an Arizona woman ran over her husband with her car, believing him to be directly responsible for Obama's reelection because he didn't vote."
The guy was badly hurt.  This episode is SO NUTS on SO MANY LEVELS!  Maybe the woman missed the word but Romney carried Arizona!  Hubby's vote would have made NO DIFFERENCE!  But her fears were so whipped up about Obama's reelection that she basically lost her mind.  Another victim of the conservative media!
