These States Invest The Least In Their Students from the Huffington Post
"A new map compiled by research engine Findthebest.com shows which states provide the most funding for students' educations. New York state tops the list, with average funding per student of $21,168 , while Utah comes in last, with average funding per student of $7,388."
Check out the interactive map! I'd be curious to see what those New York numbers were if the NY metro region was taken out -- would the rest of the state still have a high funding average. Doubt it.

I have a few comments. Notice how Utah is near the bottom of expenditures and near the top in test scores. I believe most Mormons attend public schools, and in my experience Mormons are very involved in their children’s lives. And people may joke, but I can say from experience that these families are very strong. You can see true contentment and happiness in the faces of Mormon children.
But the larger point in American education is the repugnant system of funding through local property taxes. It represents the very epitome of a caste system. When considering a new home, all educated parents check the numerous web sites that rate schools, creating a virtuous circle for those who can afford the best districts. Thus the investment in property value and children are both secured.
