Dispatches from the Bush Posse #20

One Tortured Lie: That's All it Took for War (Andrew Sullivan) from the Times [of London]

To my mind, this article captures EXACTLY where things are with the torture memos and prosecution of Bush officials.  It is RIGHT-ON-THE-MONEY in terms of capturing the core issues and what was at stake, and the essential criminality that was perpetrated on the American people.  As many of you know if you've been following the DISPATCHES, I have been ambivalent about whether Bush officials should be prosecuted.  I created this section because I found the story simply an interesting story.  No more.  For me, Andrew Sullivan's article captures precisely why I now think prosecutions MUST go forward. Bush & Company tortured hundreds of people NOT to make America safer -- but to prove that Iraq had WMDs and justify the US going to war.  Indeed, they used torture KNOWING it would generate false information.  They counted on it!  There's only one word to describe this behavior (and it's one I virtually never resort to in the political realm).  That word is evil.

New Evidence of Torture Prison in Poland from Der Spiegel [of Germany in English]

"The current debate in the US on the "special interrogation methods" sanctioned by the Bush administration could soon reach Europe. It has long been clear that the CIA used the Szymany military airbase in Poland for extraordinary renditions. Now there is evidence of a secret prison nearby."

Dems Struggle with Gitmo Politics from Politico

"The politics are ticklish for Democrats since closing Guantanamo has been a long-standing cause on the party left, strongly opposed to the Bush Administration’s anti-terror tactics."
